Testimonials

I’ve enjoyed meeting a wide range of people, learning new skills, hearing different perspectives about what makes interesting broadcasting, and having the opportunity to sit in on a program as it goes to air. The friendliness and helpfulness of everyone I’ve come across at Joy has been amazing – great stuff Joy – keep up the good work.

When I signed up for the JOY Taste of Radio course, I really didn’t know what to expect.  I thought I would get some knowledge on how to do a broadcast and a little knowledge of media law.  Not so, I have learned so much about the ins and out of Community Radio whilst meeting some
great people along the way.

The training materials are thorough and enjoyable and there are plenty of opportunities to get your hands on the radio equipment and pretend to be a superstar.  I highly recommend the Taste of Radio course to anyone who wants to step outside your normal life and take time to experience your creative side. It’s amazing fun and engaging.

I didn't really know what to expect, but was excited to see a side of our community that exists away from the dim lights and heavy baseline of nightclubs. Upon commencing the course, I discovered that JOY is full of great people who are enthusiastic about what they do, and the contribution they make towards building our community in a positive way. After completing the course, I'm looking forward to being able play my part in celebrating and supporting our community, whether it be on-air, or off.

Stories

I Tasted the Radio

One morning a few moons ago a friend and I were chatting over breakfast about her radio show on Joy 94.9. Being a humble, unassuming type, I was able to listen attentively to her for over four seconds before interjecting on that and every other topic that came before me. I was able to share my thoughts on a range of subjects from the joy of cloudlike poached eggs to my love of coffee cup stains on newspaper. I even added a few remarks about the news items under the stains for good measure.

After a few attempts at contributing to this increasingly one-sided discussion, said radio show presenter managed to get my attention by telling me all about the Taste of Radio course that was beginning in a few weeks. I was very excited by this course and signed myself up on the spot.

Once the caffeine hit had been and gone, however, I had to admit to myself that I knew very little about radio and even less about radio courses. So I did what every other internet addict would do. I googled it. I soon came upon a definition of both “Taste” and “Radio”.

Taste:
1. To distinguish the flavor of by taking into the mouth.
2. To eat or drink a small quantity of.
3. To partake of, especially for the first time; experience.
4. To perceive as if by the sense of taste.
5. Archaic. To appreciate or enjoy.

Radio:
1. The wireless transmission through space of electromagnetic waves in the approximate frequency range from 10 kilohertz to 300,000 megahertz.
2. Communication of audible signals encoded in electromagnetic waves.
3. Transmission of programs for the public by radio broadcast.

While these definitions were benign when taken separately, together they made a frightening visual. Did I really want to experience for the first time the taste of a 300,000 megahertz electromagnetic wave in my mouth? And did I really want all this to be broadcast to the unsuspecting public?

After being reassured by carers and friends that I’d gotten it all wrong and that I would simply be learning about on-air presentation, media law, digital editing, interviewing and panel operation I breathed a sigh of relief.

Over the last couple of months I’ve spent every Tuesday and occasional Thursday upstairs in the training room with Jenny and Addam learning about the various bits and pieces that come together to produce radio. While I struggled to get into the spirit of Jenny’s vocal warm-ups and Addam’s love of hand-outs, I loved using the panel in the studio and learning how to pod cast. I met a whole bunch of really interesting people that I never would have otherwise, including a near psychic from Adelaide called Kon who looked into my soul and saw Frente there.

I’m really glad I did the course and I hope to one day produce my own show on Joy 94.9. ‘Til then you can find me sitting in the volunteer section of the station boning up on media law and Adobe Audition, breathing just a little shallowly so I don’t accidentally eat a small quantity of those 300,000 megahertz electromagnetic waves.
