Become a Volunteer

With guidance from a small but dedicated group of paid staff, over 200 committed and talented volunteers facilitate day-to-day operations and produce what you hear on air. Without them, JOY would not exist. Every volunteer brings a unique contribution, sharing a common mission:

"JOY 94.9 is a gay and lesbian volunteer-based community radio station, committed to providing a voice for the diverse lesbian and gay communities, enabling freedom of expression, the breaking down of isolation and the celebration of our culture, achievements and pride."

One of the best parts of volunteering at JOY is the number of interesting people you'll meet. The JOY team is made up of a variety of people from a range of backgrounds, professions, ethnicities and sexualities - all working to a common goal, and thoroughly enjoying themselves in the process! By the way - all JOY volunteers must be a financial member of the station.

The first step in the volunteer application process before training commences is to email our Volunteer Recruitment Co-ordinator or the relevant team manager as indicated below. You will be sent a volunteer application form and offered the opportunity to present for an interview to discuss your interest in becoming involved in JOY. Every new JOY volunteer is required to do preliminary training and complete a probationary period in the Office Admin role to become familiar with operations at the station. This approach helps JOY to maintain a professional organisation and strive for quality in everything we do.

Read on to find out a little more about JOY and some of the volunteer activities performed at the station on a regular basis.

A team manager or a key volunteer coordinates all station activities. The team manager/volunteer is responsible to the station manager for the performance of their team. The station manager is responsible to the Committee of Management. Committee of Management is responsible to the members to provide the ongoing strategy and policy for the station.

Some of the volunteer roles are:

General Volunteers / Office Admin:

Office Admin is the front line team at JOY and the role is critical to the smooth running of the station; this position is usually the first point of contact for a listener and others contacting the station. The team assists the office staff and on-air presenters with a range of office and administration tasks including; answering the phones, processing memberships, handling listener queries, and greeting guests. Office Admin is the area where we generally start all new volunteers to give a broad understanding of the operations of the station and learn what is involved in the day to day running of JOY.

Administration:

Communication Support / Fundraising / Events Management / Promotions Support / Grant Writing / Media Writing / Marketing Support

IT and Broadcasting Services:

IT Support/ Online Development/ Web Support/ Production Support / Technical Support / Script Writing

On-air Programming:

The on-air presenter develops all special programs; these programs are a key part of the diversity of the station. People interested in presenting their own show need to first become a volunteer at the station, complete basic volunteer induction and training and then submit a program proposal to the JOY Programming Advisory Committee. The JOY News team prepares and reads news bulletins and basic training is provided.
